Sistas of Promise
Sistas of Promise (SOP) an initiative under the umbrella of Our Minds Our Voices (OMOV), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization designated by the Internal Revenue Service.
OMOV and SOP are coordinated entirely by a community of Black women in business, education, philanthropy, activism and girls' work, who hold deep roots in women empowerment an a legacy of entreprenuership.
OMOV Board of Directors makes the plight of females “aging out” of foster care a priority and works to change how young women are viewed and supported through their journey into adulthood after being in foster care. Spearheaded by Black women for Black girls, we are shaping our own destiny....changing the future of Black girls, Black families and Black society.
Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.
I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set her free.
Approximately 24,000 American teenagers in foster care turn 18 years old each year. At this age, they are expected to move out and start their lives on their own. Many still in high school, these teens find themselves in need of jobs, a place to live, and a means of transportation to survive.
Without the love and support of a family to fall back on, many teens who aged out of foster care find themselves struggling to succeed on their own.
· Unstable housing or homelessness.
· Justice system involvement.
· Lack of access to health care.
· Lack of employment and job training.
· Lack of adequate elementary and secondary education.
· Problems with physical health, behavioral health, and general well-being.
Our primary focus is personal growth and sustainability for females 18– 21 aging out of foster care. Personal growth and development is a transformational process, in which improvements are made in your physical, emotional, intellectual, professional, social, and/or financial state.
Sistas are encouraged to make five promises to themselves,
that often hinder women’s success:
· Use your voice wisely,
· Have a healthy presence,
· Craft your own narrative,
· Seize upon secure and stable opportunities, and
· Make use of internal and external resources.
The SOP cohort is anchored in the five SMART goals. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and within a Time Frame.
Our deliverables are:
Social, Economic, and Physical Well-being Vignettes,
The Annual “Our Mind Our Voices” Awards Event.
